Discover Hinoki

Hinoki is an evergreen tree in the cypress family, commonly called Japanese cypress. Its botanical name is Chamaecyparis obtusa. Look closely at its foliage and you will see small, overlapping leaves arranged in flat, fan-shaped sprays.

What is Hinoki?

Its wood has long been used in Japanese architecture. Today, you may also encounter the name on a bottle of hand wash or a home care product. Understanding the tree is a useful place to start. Understanding the ingredients tells you more about what is in the bottle.

What does Hinoki smell like?

Hinoki has a fresh, green, and woody scent with a dry, resinous note. Its character, strength, and staying power vary between wood, distilled ingredients, and finished products.

Hinoki water and Hinoki oil

Hinoki water is the aromatic water, or hydrosol, collected during steam distillation. Hinoki oil is the essential oil separated during the same process. They are distinct ingredients.

When choosing a Hinoki product, look beyond its scent to the ingredient list. It may contain cypress water, cypress oil, or both. The complete formula and intended use matter.

The Hinoki
we use at hinok

We steam-distill pruned leaves and branches of Jeju Hinoki Cypress in Jeju, South Korea, to obtain cypress water and oil. The remaining plant material is fermented and reused as forest compost.

Cypress water is the sole ingredient in The Spray. The Hand Wash combines cypress water and oil with cleansing ingredients.
